Daisy chain throw

The first thing I ever made with yarn, 8 years ago, was a blanket for Mom. The colors border on garish (cream, plum, and forest green) and one side is six inches wider than the other, but I loved the pattern. So, when it came time to design a throw crocheted from alpaca yarn, I went back to that very first blanket.

I modified the original blanket pattern to be a narrower throw, and I adapted the color scheme to deal with the fact that I had much less black yarn. Each row of daisies is three rows of crochet stitches (the blanket is upside down in all the pictures, doh).

By the time I had a couple of feet crocheted, I kind of wished I’d made it two daisies wider. So I put a wide border of simple double stitches all the way around it. So there would be no front or back, I reversed the direction I was going with each row, which gives the border a kind of ruffly texture.

I’m a perfectionist, so I can think of half a dozen things I’d have done differently if I did it again. I will write all of those things down in my fiber journal for next time! But I still think it came out pretty darn good.

My brother’s weekend on the ranch

My poor brother pulled alpaca-sitting duty on the coldest weekend we’ve had so far this winter. The wind was howling hard enough to tip over full buckets of water, the alpacas were feeling snippy and the kitties were feeling needy.

Whisper watches

“I’m watching you. Always.”

When it was warm enough, the kitties followed my bro around the ranch like shadows. Mom and Dad had abandoned them for a weekend retreat, and they were sure as heck not going to get left behind again! Most mornings, though, they weren’t even interested in leaving their heated cat palace.

Squeaky and Whisper

“Yeah, we’re not getting up.”

Meanwhile, Bravado had appointed himself as the “fun police”. Absolutely no fun was to be had in his presence. None. Whenever Tripoli and Morocco got a game of “bump and run” started (which is just what it sounds like, they run around bumping into each other), Bravado would immediately run over and break it up.

Morocco and Tripoli Bravado says no

We’re due for some warmer weather soon. Hopefully we’ll climb above the freezing mark tomorrow. And I spent the weekend holed up with my crochet hook, so I have finished project to show you on Wednesday!

Whisper can’t wait for spring

Well, Kitties will be Kitties. Mom calls Squeaky, Zipporah and Whisper her “Sweetie Kitties”, but it looks like Whisper’s up to something the birdies aren’t going to think is so sweet. Our close friends Donna, Laura and Roger remembered Mom and Dad’s love for birds, and for Christmas gave them a beautiful bird bath, but um… they forgot about Whisper’s love for the little birds that will be visiting.

Bird bath has been in place 30 seconds…”What’s this thing?”

We have a berm on the north side of the front door and Donna thought the bird bath would be a great addition between the lupines and the dwarf junipers. Come to find out, Whisper thinks the same thing. Mom estimates Whisper was in the bowl approximately one minute and 12 seconds after Dad had put the bird bath in the ground.

1 min, 12 seconds…”Oooo, great addition!”

Whisper wants to let our friends know, he can’t wait for spring!

“Is it spring yet?”

The great break IN

Breaking out, breaking in…it’s a po-TAY-to, po-TAH-to sort of thing to alpacas. As long as they are getting somewhere they are not supposed to be, they are happy. A few days ago, Mom found most of the girls in this space, between the boy’s paddock and the horse’s paddock.

BetweenPaddocks

Lined up nose to tail, single file and unable to turn around, were Mikayla, Brittany, Marseille, and Tulip. Boogie and Heidi, the horses, stared at them from one side of the fence, while the boys were lined up in a gallery on the other side. Everyone looked at Mom as she arrived. I’m guessing Heidi was wearing her “Ooohh what’s Mom gonna do now?” face, while the girls casually pretended they weren’t standing in a no-go zone.

MarsyBreaksIN

All the alpacas take turns destroying any and all temporary fencing around the ranch. They’d been working on the fence that keeps them out of this narrow chute for awhile. Sometimes, a tiny bit of hay gets blown in there, but really, it’s all about the challenge.

Tuscany

Mom just yelled, “I’m too busy to deal with this now,” and went about her chores, keeping an eye on the trouble makers. After a few false starts, Tulip figured out how to back out. Marsielle couldn’t, and began to hum. But Aunty Brittany came to the rescue, firmly planting her butt in Marsy’s face and backing out, pushing the younger alpaca as she went. Mikayla,  who’d led them all in there in the first place, calmly followed.

Because, of course, she meant to do that.

Baby hat and booties

Well! Long time no crochet, but I think I’ve still got it!

Baby hat, booties

I made these baby booties and hat for a friend’s baby shower. Although I’m still not sure if I got the sizing right for a tiny person (they might be a bit big), I think they came out pretty well. My big little brother, who is a 6′ 4″ metal music playing manly man, actually used the adjective “adorable” to describe them without any prompting from me.

Baby bootie

I crocheted them using the yarn I spun in the last post. It was quite fun to work with, if I do say so myself!

We have some fun posts lined up for you this week. I’m already knee deep in another project, the girls (the alpaca girls) have been up to their usual shenanigans, and a bit of a wrench was thrown into the daily chore routine recently.

Yarn – Baby grey

I wasn’t completely unproductive over the holiday break. In addition to a whole lot of sleeping and eating, I spun a few hundred yards of this lovely grey yarn.

Yarn - Baby grey far 2

It’s 50% baby alpaca, 25% Mikayla’s fiber and 25% Loredo’s fiber (he belonged to the ranch that sold us our alpacas). “Baby alpaca” roving, which does not have to come from actual baby alpacas, is the softest grade of alpaca fiber. I spun (marled) the baby alpaca roving with Mikayla’s fiber in one single, then I spun the baby alpaca with Loredo’s fiber for the other single. The finished 2-ply yarn is one of the softest I’ve ever made, with a gentle variegated color that matches its luscious texture.

Yarn - Baby grey

This is the first yarn I’ve spun with a specific project in mind. It will be my second project, ever, that I crochet using my own handspun yarn. Which is a little surprising, since I’ve spun miles of yarnIt’s coming along nicely, but I’m not letting the cat out of the bag until Monday on this one 🙂

New Year’s Resolutions

The family took some time on New Years to examine our accomplishments from last year and what we’d like to do better next year. I couldn’t deny that my update record here on the blog has been spotty lately. It’s hard to believe that for almost a year I posted something every day, and now I’m doing good to get up one entry a week.

One thing we hear, over and over, is how much everyone enjoys reading about our adventures. So, we’ve committed to doing Monday, Wednesday, and Friday posts. Mom, Dad, and my brother will all be chipping in more stories.

I’ve also decided NOT to unpack my spinning wheel yet. Last night I broke out my crochet hooks for the first time in two years, and I made something I’d never made before. That shouldn’t be a big deal, but I’ve been down in a creative rut for a while now. So, hopefully I’ll have new and different projects to show you!

Happy New Year, everyone! Thanks for being on this ride with us. We know we couldn’t do it without you.

Second verse, same as the first

I occasionally (ok, usually) have trouble spinning one kind of yarn for any significant length of time. I just get bored. This is somewhat surprising, since back when I crocheted I pretty much only made blankets, which is a repetitive process not far separated from tedium.

But lately, I just haven’t had the creative energy to come up with any new yarn ideas. When I want to spin something, and I don’t want to think about what, I sit down with my bag of Gustav’s fiber, and I spin medium-weight brown yarn.

HotChocolate02_LRGHotChocolate_LRG

I named it Hot Chocolate back when I first started spinning it. At this point, I’ve probably spun 30 ozs and several thousand yards of the stuff. Strange thing is, I still like it. It’s fluffy and…stable. Dependable, even. If a yarn can be dependable.

Anyhoo. No big take away message today. Just personifying my yarn here. Totally normal. When I start talking to it, you can have me committed. And yelling at it for not being balanced doesn’t count!

Hat and scarf sets online!

Mom and Dad spent most of Sunday uploading our inventory of hat and scarf sets to the online store. Amazing how long that takes.

Anyhoo, check them out!

The online store is here!

I am very pleased to announce that we have finally put our online store together! You can find a link to the store next to the “Home” link above. Holy alpacas, that was difficult. And I do this sort of thing for a living.

The catalog is quite limited at the moment, but as of this morning, all the handspun yarn I have in inventory is listed. By Monday, Mom and Dad hope to have hat and scarf sets up.

Let us know if you spot something that is broken or doesn’t make sense. Any feedback is welcome and appreciated.
