Glitzy yarn: Heart of Darkness

I’ve been working on another yarn for two evenings now, and I quite like it. It’s hard to see in the photos, but it’s Brittany’s fiber mixed with the shiny, red/brown glitz.

See the red sparklies?

The trick to Brittany’s fiber is a really, really tight twist. So I think I’ll spin it twice, once actually spinning fiber into yarn, and the second time to add more twist. This should give it a nice look when it’s plied, and will also add elasticity, I think.

The single, so far. Hard to see the glitz, which may be good, because it looked like a lot in the box!

Of course, their fiber is different every year, so figuring it out now doesn’t guarantee future success. Diet, age, stress, and all sorts of things factor in to the quality of the fiber. This year, our fiber is ridiculously strong and glossy.

Ideas for M baby names?

Still no baby, but now that the vet is out-of-town for a week, we’re all hoping Mikayla WON’T give birth.

The report from the ranch is that Mikayla’s become quite a recluse. She’s not standing in the pen with the other alpacas, you really have to look around to find her. Then, when you spot her, she tries to find an even more hidden place, with a very “Don’t look at me!” demeanor. Aww, honey, you don’t look fat! Just well fed and fluffy.

I thought I told you to go away! Stop looking at me!

Cliff House names our alpacas after places, and we keep the first letter of the mama’s name (so Mikayla’s first baby was Morocco). We need M place names, suitable for boys and girls. All I can think of is Malaysia and Mali. Any ideas?

Alpaca bio: Brittany

Brittany stole our hearts before we’d even really decided we wanted to do this whole alpaca thing. It had taken us years to become horse-people, did we really need a new species? So we went to an alpaca breeder to learn about caring for them. The first thing they did was invite us to meet their animals. Because once you’ve met them, you either love them or don’t quite get them. (Pics and stories after the jump).

Hey! Are you looking over here? I'm coming in to see you!

Let’s just rename the site “TripIsAdorable.com”

OMG. Prepare for cuteness overload…

The legs, the yawn, the ears! It's too cute, my brain 'asplode.

It’s so fluffy I’m gonna die!

I’m sure I had other things to say today about…like…yarn…and stuff. But nothing can really compete.

Trip gets his first monthly checkup

It’s hard to believe, but Tripoli is one whole month old! The vet came out to do his checkup, and Mom and Dad had to catch him to weigh him. Which resulted in the most addorable picture of a proud Dad and his four legged adoptee.

From batts to beautiful yarn: purple rain

In only 10 hours, you too can take a batt (it’s a sheet of carded fiber) to two ply yarn. But wait, there’s more! Recruit friends and family for the first dozen steps in the process, and you only have handle the washed and carded fiber a mere six times! 😛

Ok, kidding aside, here’s a quick step-by-step of what I was up to this weekend. Mom and Grammy brought two boxes full of washed and carded fiber up to me on Thursday, and I couldn’t wait to spin these beautiful batts of Brittany’s fiber carded with my favorite bamboo/merino roving.

CliffHouseAlpacas.com is here!

CliffHouseAlpacas.com is officially up and running! Your current links will redirect to here, but if you want to change them to something shorter, go ahead.

Still no new baby, so here is a picture of Mom holding Tuscany last year, when he was only a few days old:

Tuscany and Mom

Mom holds Tuscany a few days after he was born, in the summer of 2010.

Also, a big warm welcome to Dad! He will contribute posts soon, which is great since he has all the best stories about the herd. As a teaser, let me just tell you that alpacas + sprinklers = hilarity.

Mikayla’s baby update

Our Mikayla is due to have her baby any day now. It has been hot hot hot down in Castle Rock, with no afternoon thunderstorms to cool down the atmosphere (and everyone living beneath it). Poor Mikayla is now 11 months pregnant, and she just can’t get comfortable. She lays down on her side, rather than kushing (which is how they normally lay down, upright, with their legs all tucked under themselves) and she wanders around the paddock irritably. Which is not very different from her normal behavior, actually. Mikayla can be a bit of a drama queen.

I’ll update you as soon as the situation changes!

New yarn type: bubble yarn

I’ve been spinning for about a year now. Like most people do, I started on a drop spindle. I stuck with that for months, going slowly but steadily, learning to love the feel of yarn created beneath my fingertips. Now I’ve upgraded technologies from the ancient to the medieval and I’ve got a wheel. I’ve been making pretty standard stuff, since by the time the skirting, sorting and carding is done, I don’t have the energy to be creative.

But Mom and Dad have taken over the pre-processing now and are experimenting with the carder.  So I get to spend more time spinning! Here’s what I’ve just made (details after the jump):

Purple bamboo silk/merino blend, plied with "Rosy".

Drum carder review: Pat Green’s Happy Hybrid

Cliff House Alpacas finally bit the bullet and invested in a drum carder. We agonized for long months about which carder would be the right fit for us, and finally settled on the the Happy Hybrid by Pat Green Carders, LTD. Since the decision was such a hard one for us, and since reviews of drum carders are few and far between, I decided to update you all on how exactly this carder is working for us.
